CONTINGENCY 

The Medium of Contingency, Elie Ayache –

 

Tearing contingency away from the “map of possibilities” and rethinking the “medium” in which contingency swims we choose physics, instead of metaphysics, and through quantum mechanics, we can gain access to a kind of contingency, which exists as a range of possible states not yet decided.  All of a sudden, contingency “strikes behind the scene where things are, precisely at the hinge where they can be”.  No longer resting on a foundation of probability – now contingency becomes a “material medium”.    Contingency becomes “an event, a happening, an upheaval of matter” no longer in the realm of metaphysics, no longer working from traditional divisions of thought, contingency becomes “like an arrow, the stroke faster than the reflected light of reason.”
